Driving along Via del Mare, it takes around 30 minutes to reach Ancient Ostia which was the most important Port in the ancient World and its names means in Latin "mouth of the river", as per its location close to the Tiber River. It started to become more and more famous from 300 BC, but only as "Emporium of Rome" up to 5/6 AD, when Rome had the political and financial crisis.
The several sacks during the centuries to the city, found the city completely without defence and a big epidemic of malaria forced the few habitants to leave the city.
The first excavation in Ostia started of the beginning of last century, and even if, there are only Ruins, visitors will be able to understand the real aspect of ancient Roman Life and its structure.
The visit will start from Via delle Tombe "Necropolis", Terme di Nettuno, the big Theatre, The Capitolium, the thermal baths, the House of Diana etc.
