A tour in the heart of Milan exploring its jewels Teatro della Scala and Museum, The Poldi Pezzoli Museum an elegant old aristocratic Residence, full of priceless works of art and the imposing Palazzo Belgioioso.
Itinerary: Via Manzoni, once known as "Corsia del Giardino", because of many parks this street acquired its present name in 1865, when the great Italian Novelist Manzoni died. Its aristocratic appearance is created by the patrician Palace of Teatro della Scala, which stimulated The opening of chic coffees attracting a smart customers; Plazzo Brentani, Palazzo Anguissola, Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Palazzo Gallarati Scotti, Palazzo Borromeo d'Adda.
Scala Theatre: built by Giuseppe Piermarini, this opera house owes its name to the fact that it stands on the site of Santa Maria della Scala, a church built in 1381 for Regina della Scala : Visconti's wife. The Theatre opened in 1778: it was badly bombed in 1943 and rebuilt three years later. The traditional opening night of the opera season takes place on 07 December, the feast day of Sant'Ambrogio (Milan's patron Saint). The Audutorium is made on wood covered with red velvet and decorated with gilded stucco-work, the interior boats marvellous acoustics and has a seating capacity of 2.015. The theatre museum was founded in 1913 and boasts a fine collection of sculpture, original scores, paintings and ceramics related to the history of La Scala as well as of theatre in general.
The Poldi Pezzoli Museum Originally the building was the home of the titled art collector Gian Giacomo Pezzoli. When he died in 1879 he left all the collections he had so lovingly assembled his own home to a foundation set up for the benefit to the general public. Although seriously damaged during the last war the museum was quickly restored and today, while scrupulously adhering to the most modern criteria, it has managed today, it has managed to preserve the feeling of a 19th century private collection. It was opened to the public in 1881. The building, a singular example of a late 19th century aristocratic Milanese residence, contains fine collection of paintings, sculpture, armour, rugs, watches, glass and textiles. The Museum's symbol is a portrait of a Young Lady attributed to Antonio Pollaiolo.
San Fedele Church: The Church is the Milanese seat of the Jesuit Order, commissioned by San Carlo Borromeo Borromeo from Pellegrino Tibaldi in 1569, and it is a typical model of a Counter Reformation Church. A statue of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, whose death certificate is kept in San Fedele stands in the square.
Manzoni's House and Palazzo Belgioioso: This is the house where Alessandro Manzoni lived from 1814 until his death in 1873after a fall on the steps of San Fedele. The perfectly preserved interior includes Manzoni's studio and bedrooms. The house is now the seat of the National Centre of Manzoni Studies, which was founded in 1937. The brick façade overlooks Piazza Belgioioso, named after the Palazzo. This monumental building was designed by Piermarini for Prince Alberico XII di Belgioioso d'Este.
