The Colosseum: its name was originally used for the Colossus of Nero, a huge Statue the Emperor had originally placed at the entrance to this Golden House, and which was subsequently moved to the front of the Flavian Amphitheatre. Emperor Vespasiano started to built it but his son Tito inaugurated the Amphitheatre with a festival of 100 days, to amuse the populace with fantastic spectacles of gladiators in bloody combat with wild animals. Only on 523 combats where prohibited.(Inside Visit)
The Roman Forum: ancient centre of commerce, the topological, social, political and judicial centre of the city until the advent of the Empire, then it became the area sacred to the memory of the origins of Rome and the sites of public ceremonies.(Inside Visit)
Capitol Hill Square: Two centuries after Rome's founding on this and the adjacent Palatine Hill, the enormous Temple of Jupiter was built, making it the holiest part of this Holy city. Traitors were hurled from the Hill, including a woman who let the Sabine enemy forces into Rome. On 166 AD an unknown sculptor produced this bronze equestrian statue of MarcusAurelius. The actual stage-set of the square has been designed by Michelangelo.
(outside Visit)
Driving through Via dei Fori Imperiali towards Colosseum, you will discover the Forum of Trajan, Trajan's Column (showing Trajan's victories in Easter Europe), Basilica Ulpia, Trajan's Market. Just below the Palatine's ruins there is Circo Massimo, where Rome's first recorded games were horse races organized by city founder Romulus.
