Meeting with the driver and the guide in hotel. The Old Testament figure of David, the young giant-killer who saved the Hebrew people from tyranny, had special meaning for Renaissance Florentines who saw their city under constant threat from envious rival states. The tour will include the site of Florence’s former Jewish Ghetto and the "Street of the Synagogues". You will then explore the political and artistic symbolism of David as portrayed in five master-works of Renaissance sculpture: Ghiberti’s dazzling, gilt-bronze relief of “David Slaying Goliath” for the Baptistery doors; Donatello’s two versions of the young hero in marble and bronze and Verrocchio’s bronze statue in the Bargello Museum, and Michelangelo’s monumental marble “David” for the Piazza Signoria, now housed in the Accademia Museum. A tour of the Great Synagogue and its Jewish Museum can also be arranged. Return to hotel. |
