A pleasant stroll to visit the most famous places of Milan P.zza della Scala and Galleria, the cities splendid parlour. From The Brera Art Gallery in search of inestimable masterpieces of Italian Art.
Itinerary: Pinacoteca di Brera, which holds one of Italy's most important art collections, featuring masterpieces by leading Italian artists from 13th to 20th centuries. Pinacoteca is housed in the late 16th century early 17th built for the Jesuits in place of Santa Maria di Brera Humiliati Monastery.  The Jesuits made this into a cultural centre by establishing a prestigious school, a library and the astronomical observatory, all activities supported by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The Brera Gallery has 31 rooms, with works arranged in chronological order. The only exception is Room 1, where the Jesi Collection in on display. It includes 20th century works which will be exhibited elsewhere in future. The paintings are also grouped together by schools of painting (Venetian, Tuscan, Lombard).
Chiesa di San Giuseppe: a quick see to the elegant baroque faced, one of the fines architectural achievements of Richini.
P.zza Scala and its Buildings: Crossing the Vittorio Emanuele Arcade from south to north, we come out in the famous Piazza della Scala. On the far side of the square there is La Scala Theatre and opposite Palazzo Marino, today Milan's City Hall. The Monument in the centre of the square represents Leonardo da Vinci surrounded by his pupils.
Vittorio Emanuele Arcade: designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, this cross -shaped structure is surmounted by an extraordinary coloured glass and iron doom. The modern technical skill and originality of the Milan Galleria have nothing to fear from a comparison with similar structures put up in London and Paris about the same time. Today this glassed in street is a centre for both cultural and mindane activities with its well stocked book and record shops, coffees and famous eating spots.
P.zza del Duomo: the heart of Milan is P.zza del Duomo, the whole city seems to revolve around the square. The packed with visitors fascinated by the great machine of the Duomo, the third largest church in the world after St. Peter's and Seville Cathedral, the Duomo towers over the large square named after it. In the Centre of the square is the equestrian monument of Vittorio Emanuele II. But the most fascinating sights are below and not on the Cathedral square.
Montenapoleone Street: Milan, like the other great capitals world-over, is not just art and history. Milan too has fashionable streets where "in" people flock to shop and meet. Via Montenapoleone, one of Milan's most elegant thoroughfares, is lined with luxurious boutiques, antique shops, tearooms and cafés.
